This is going to be an advice column that students can go to when they need some guidance. With this column, students can come for school or personal related problems. We will keep the students anonymous. The only guidelines we set are that the questions you ask must be appropriate enough to be in a student newspaper. If you have a serious situation and it involves harming yourself or others, you should speak to a trained adult about it. As students we are not able to help with situations like this.
You can email your questions to [email protected]. We’re going to provide an example question and answer to show you how the article will go. In each article, there will be multiple questions and answers, if you don’t see yours right after you submit it, wait for the next edition.

Dear Fiona,
Should I play a sport in high school?
Sincerely,
Athletically Curious
Should I play a sport in high school?
Sincerely,
Athletically Curious
Dear Athletically Curious,
Playing sports in high school looks good on college applications, but you have to be prepared to cope with all the practice time and school work. Because of the time commitment to athletics and academics, all of it will be harder to handle than for the average student. However, if you feel that you want to play and you can handle the extra work, then I say go for it!
Sincerely,
Fiona

Dear Fiona,
I’m losing my friends, what do I do?
Sincerely,
Friendship Fallout
Dear Friendship Fallout,
If you’re beginning to lose your friends, have you considered talking about the situation with them to see what is going on? Maybe you aren’t the problem in this and you could just be growing away from the people in your group. As people grow up, they either grow together or grow apart and this could be one of those moments of growing apart. I say talk to these friends and see what’s going on for them to be drifting off. In the end, everything happens for a reason just keep your head up.
Sincerely,
Fiona

Dear Fiona,
I already bought prom tickets and my boyfriend just broke up with me, what should I do?
Sincerely,
Prom Lonely
Dear Prom Lonely,
Well if he broke up with you right before prom, first of all, he’s no good for you. Second of all, take a close friend that isn’t already going to prom and get them to go with you. I say you dress up and make yourself look great and show him what he’s missing out on. Prom isn’t just about the couples and romance, sometimes it can be you and your girls and that could be so much more fun.
Sincerely,
Fiona

Dear Fiona,
How do I know that I’m making the right decisions in school?
Sincerely,
Pressured by Peers
Dear Pressured by Peers,
If you feel like the decisions you’re making aren’t the right ones, then you should probably reconsider making them. Just think of all your consequences before you make any choices no matter where you are or what you’re doing.
Sincerely,
Dear Fiona,
Why are some teachers so uncaring?
Sincerely,
Underappreciated
Dear Underappreciated,
Some teachers may not be uncaring as you say, they may just have some personal things going on in their lives. Also, some teachers have specific deadlines they have to meet, so they may be more focused on the school work they have to assign rather than how the work is affecting you.
Sincerely,
Fiona
Dear Fiona,
Why are girls objectified in school?
Sincerely,
Double Standard
Dear Double Standard,
Girls are more objectified in schools because in history, girls have always had to be more conservative about their clothing. Also, we’re coming into a time where a lot of adults (administrators) may be old fashioned about dressing the way people do now. Times and styles have changed more but it takes time for people to get used to it and by the time they get used to it, a new style comes out. My advice is if you believe someone is going to say something about your outfit, just don’t wear it to school.
Sincerely,
Fiona
Dear Fiona,
Why do they force us to leave breakfast so early when the bell just rang and we have plenty of time to get to class?
Sincerely,
Hungry and Tired
Dear Hungry and Tired,
They make everyone go to class early because they want to make sure everyone gets to class on time and that there aren’t a lot of people hanging out in the halls. However, if you still need time to eat, maybe you could politely ask them to let you finish your food or get to school a little earlier.
Sincerely,
Fiona
