13 Reasons Why Review
By: Christopher Edge
Last year’s retro 1980’s Netflix hit Stranger Things has its second season coming out later this year. However, if you were a fan of that show, you’re going to enjoy one of the newest Netflix produced series, Thirteen Reasons Why.
Based on the 2007 New York Times Best Seller Young Adult novel of the same name by Jay Asher, Thirteen Reasons Why follows high school student Clay Jensen as he tries to make sense of his first love’s suicide. Hannah Baker, the apparent target of teenage bullying and harassment, has recorded 7 ½ cassette tapes of her narration of the 13 people who caused her to take her own life. Clay is dumbfounded as to what he could have done to wind up on the tapes and tortures himself as he listens to each cassette to solve the mystery.
The tone and look of this series is not as dark as Stranger Things, but it has that same atmosphere of a world where children and teens must fend for themselves and adults are incapable of understanding the issues. If you have a Netflix account and 13 hours to spare, this could be your new binge-addiction. Be aware that it is rated for viewers ages 16 and up and there are issues with language and depictions of graphically real scenes.
The show is about suicide. If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please contact one of the following resources for help or speak to a responsible adult.

Beyoncé's Scholarship Program
By: Zeniya Cooley
Beyoncé commemorated the one-year anniversary of her album Lemonade by announcing the Formation Scholars awards on April 24. According to Billboard, the program will bestow scholarships to women in college who show an interest in arts and humanities. Beyoncé’s website stated the objective is to “encourage and support young women who are unafraid to think outside the box and are bold, creative, conscious, and confident.”
The scholarships will be for the 2017-2018 school year, and a student from each of four schools - Berklee College of Music, Howard University, Parsons School of Design, and Spelman College - will be chosen for the scholarship program. In order to be eligible for the program, the students have to be studying either creative arts, music, literature, or African-American studies.
The website said to contact the colleges for more information and details about application deadlines.
