Junior Varsity Soccer

This year, we had the opportunity to form a JV soccer team for the first time. The team consisted of mostly middle school students that were from Hillcrest Middle School, Ebenezer Middle School, and even students who were homeschooled. The JV team gives the middle school students the chance to participate in high school sports that aren’t provided at the middle schools. It also consisted of freshmen from Crestwood High School.
The coaches are a big part of the team. “It’s my first year playing soccer for Crestwood High, and I like it a lot. I really like the coaches, they push us more than others, but it helps us get better. They always make the practices fun and sometimes let us practice with the varsity players, which also helps our team get better,” said Savannah Paugh, 9th.
Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world, being played by 250 million players in over 200 different countries. Soccer is becoming more and more popular around the world due to the premieres on TV. There is Major League Soccer, English Premiere League, and Spain’s La Liga, and premieres for tournaments. It is also getting more popular for kids due to it being so kid-friendly, and the sport doesn’t require a lot of equipment compared to others.
The first soccer match was played in December of 1863 in London and was a 0-0 draw between the two teams, Barnes Football Club and Richmond Football Club. When soccer was first created, players were allowed to bite, kick, and punch the other players, and they could also play with their hands. As the years progressed, the rules got better. They weren’t allowed to make contact with the other players in order to hurt them or attempt to overpower the others; now, the players aren’t allowed to use their hands either.

Kickin’ It

This season the Varsity girls’ soccer team had a lot of wins and great shots. They played over 20 teams and put their all into each and every game. They beat Darlington by a score of 8-0. Gloria Reyes, 10th, said, “My proudest moment this season is any game with the girls I love.”
Some of the players are seniors, so it’s a little bittersweet; this was their last season, last time playing the sport they love for Crestwood. However, they all have big futures ahead. Chantell Williams, 12th, said, “I will continue to play soccer because it’s something I love and it helps take my mind off stuff.”
Through all the sweat and tears, it was a great season for the Lady Knights. They practiced hard and played harder. The next season will definitely be one to watch.

Boys' Soccer

Soccer, also known as “futbol,” is a very popular sport in South America, Mexico, and many countries around the world. It originally started in England during the 19th century, and it spread from there. The Varsity boys' soccer team may be playing for a high school, but they prioritize it as if they were competing to go to the World Cup and play against different countries. They’ve been working really hard this year and have faith that they will make it to the playoffs this season. “Soccer has always been a passion of mine and, honestly, I think we’re going to make it to the championships this year,” said Joel Daniels, 12th. The boys’ and girls’ soccer Senior Night will also occur on Monday, April 24th, with the girls beginning at 5pm and the boys at 7:45pm at Crestwood against Lakewood High.
