Post Spring Break
By: Hailey Weber
Spring break is the time that students can get away and spend time with family and/or friends. Maeracle Bailey, 12th said, “I’m spending my last high school spring break with Harleigh Egan, Julia Sierra, Hailey Weber, and a few other friends I‘ve grown up with in Myrtle Beach at Harleigh's beach house.” Many people travel during this break and get to have a sense of freedom while some students stay home and work to get extra hours and money to save for summer break coming up. Spring break is a great way to get away from the stress of life and relax, it also gives you a little taste into your summer vacation. A variety of students stayed the whole week of spring break in Myrtle Beach and some even went out of state.

Bombing of Syria
By: Brittany Adkins
Chemical weapons and warfare have been banned since after World War II and haven’t been used around the world since until Tuesday, April 4 in Syria. Syria gassed their own people between 8 and 9 o’clock on that day, killing at least 85 people and injuring over 350. A few hours after they were taken to a hospital that night, they then bombed the clinic.
In World War II, we used different gases like chlorine gas, phosgene gas, and mustard gas. Chlorine gas targets your lungs, making it harder to breathe and cough and creates a crackling sound when you breathe. Phosgene gas doesn’t target anything specific, but some symptoms are coughing, watery and itchy eyes, vomiting, difficulty breathing, and skin contact with it could result in burns or frostbite. Mustard gas mainly targets the lungs too, making it hard to breathe; it burns your eyes and can be absorbed into the body through inhalation, ingestion, or making contact with skin or eyes. Both sides of the war used chemical warfare and caused about 1.3 million deaths.
In retaliation to the chemical warfare used in Syria on their own people, the U.S. launched a military strike. The Friday after the chemical attack, President Trump called for a missile attack because of their use of chemical warfare. They launched 59 missiles toward the Al Shayrat Airbase, home to the warplanes that carried out the chemical attack earlier that week. The missiles were launched from the USS Porter and the USS Ross and aimed for aircraft shelters, aircraft, ammunition, air defense systems, and radar systems. The airstrike only killed six people, but the officials said the planners did everything in their power to keep from having casualties and are still determining all of the damage done because of the airstrike.

Chorus Cabaret
By: Julia Sierra
Before everyone left for spring break, Crestwood’s chorus put on a grand show. Typically, a cabaret is sort of like a concert that people watch and enjoy a meal with. However, our chorus put a different spin on it; at our school, it’s a collection of solos and small group performances.
Many students performed solos, such as Shelby Hosack, who performed the song “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” Shelby said, “It felt wonderful and amazing to perform at the Cabaret. I felt perfectly at home. The adrenaline rush and the feeling of the applause is what I live for. I could do it every day for the rest of my life and be perfectly content.”

Easter
By: Calaysia Fullwood
Most people understand that April 16th - Easter Sunday - deals with the resurrection of Jesus Christ, but for some, it's all about the egg hunt, colorful baskets, and the Easter bunny.
No one really knows the legend of the Easter bunny, but it appears to have been brought to the United States by settlers from Germany in the 1700s. Over the past 200 years, the Easter bunny has been the symbol of the holiday in the U.S. The Easter bunny is just like Santa Claus but, instead of bringing presents, it brings Easter baskets full of candy and toys on Easter morning. The bunny also hides eggs all over the house and garden, which allows for the Easter egg hunt.
In other countries, other animals are used as symbols of Easter. For example, in Switzerland, it's the Easter cuckoos; instead of just delivering eggs, they bring cakes and clothes. There are additional symbols besides the Easter bunny that represent Easter, for example, a pretzel shape symbolizes arms crossed in prayer, and daffodils and tulips symbolize spring and new life.
Some people believe that it's silly to incorporate a bunny and other animals with something so special and important as Christ's resurrection.
Most students did not have plans for Easter. Genesis Dalcourt,10th, stated, “I didn't really plan anything for Easter, but I believe I will be going to church.” While some didn't know what they were doing for Easter, Shaniya McDowell, 10th, already had something in mind. She said, “For Easter, I plan to help out with the egg hunt and give out Easter baskets at my church.”

I-85 Atlanta Bridge
By: Brittany Adkins
One of the major bridges through Atlanta on the interstate was set on fire at 7 o’clock on Thursday, March 30th. Allegedly, a homeless person set a sofa on fire on top of a shopping cart under the overpass, igniting the flammable construction materials. 700 feet of the bridge was ruined, and reporters say it should cost about 234 million dollars to rebuild the bridge. Builders began to reconstruct the bridge recently, and they expect it to be done by mid-June of this year.
Three people have been taken into custody for the destruction of the bridge and all are suspected to be homeless. The investigators filed charges at about 3 P.M. on March 30th after interrogating them. The police and investigators believe that the homeless people all lived under the bridge and, although they denied it, the officers believe that they used “available” resources to set the bridge on fire.
The bridge collapsing has made the commute to work and school more difficult, but people are finding alternative routes to take to get around the wreckage. One lawyer spoke about how it could help the community, saying that it creates less traffic, and more people are carpooling since it’s happened, which helps the community. The Friday after the fire, there were major delays for Atlanta with everyone swamping other highways and finding new ways to get to work and school. The day of and after the fire, they closed nearby schools, and many nearby offices due to the problem with the daily commute.

Adventures in the Summertime
By: Jessica Adkins
Summer is filled with sand, sun, and endless adventures that will stick with you forever. Students and teachers look forward to being out of school for two months to relax, get ready for the next school year, and spend time with friends and family. Graduating seniors enjoy their last summer with some of their friends before they all part ways and begin their adventures into adulthood. Tre' Haggie, 12th, said, “This summer will be my last summer in South Carolina, I’m moving down to Florida to go to college for video game design and to be with my girl.”
Other students have other plans for the summer, for example, John Dunleavy, 10th, said, “I plan on going to Washington State for part of the summer to visit my dad then when I get back I’ll be working and beginning my college classes at USC Sumter.” Adventure after adventure is all students are looking for, and that’s where summer comes into play when they can hit the beaches and go different places.

Report Cards
By: Zeniya Cooley
Report cards were issued to students on March 31, and there were a variety of reactions. Some felt that their grades were excellent, some thought their grades were average, and some saw their grades as unsatisfactory. Regardless of the letter that was posted on the paper, students were shown their academic progress in their four classes.
Genesis Dalcourt, 10th, said, “[My report card] was satisfactory.” Dalcourt is one of the many students who were content with what they saw on the paper given in homeroom. Others wished their grades were better. “I was kind of disappointed because I know I could've done better,” commented Krysten Skinner, 10th, after viewing hers.
Even though getting great grades in all subjects can be challenging, it is still possible. They strive and set their minds to achieving those academic goals. Students know at Crestwood High School that academics are the priority, so they make sure to do well in their different classes.

Chicago Gun Violence
By: Brittany Adkins
Chicago hasn’t been shown in a positive light lately due to recent gun violence. At the end of 2016, there were 762 homicides, and 2017 began with more gun violence. The first gunfight of the year happened at a bar on January 1st and ended with two men dead. In the early hours of January 1st, a man who physically resisted arrest - after being in a police car chase - was shot and was in critical condition.
Gangs in Chicago are also starting to use high-powered rifles more often due to the damage they can inflict. The bullets used can tear through almost any material, even bulletproof vests issued to police officers. They’re using these weapons to kill members of other gangs and even innocent bystanders. An area used to hearing constant gunfire couldn’t even identify the sound of the frightening weapon; they said it scared them to hear it and not know what it was.
The gun violence isn’t only affecting adults in the city; it’s taking the lives of young boys and girls. The city of Chicago is hoping to protect victims and their families more firmly and want to focus more on them. Illinois wants to put mandatory prison time on those who are illegally carrying firearms, but those with a carry license should not worry. They also want to give police officers more leeway to search for illegal firearms and those carrying them, stating that it is lawful as long as there is no racial profiling. Most of the Chicago shooting victims are African-American, but the suspects are as well.

Jostens Delivery
By: Calaysia Fullwood
As the school year is coming to an end and with graduation approaching, seniors are very nervous but excited to walk across the stage. On Thursday, March 30th, Jostens representatives came to deliver the seniors their graduation items. The Jostens room was located on the lecture hall beside the cafeteria. Seniors were able to go during their lunches and in between classes.
There were three Jostens employees who were very friendly and worked hard to make sure everyone had what they needed. The seniors received a plastic bag with their items inside and, when the Jostens employees gave seniors their items, they would say “Have a great day and congratulations!” Many of the seniors came with their parents to make sure that everything was paid for and that they got exactly what they ordered.
As the seniors continued to come and pick up their items, they realized that the school year is quickly ending. A few of them became emotional. While some seniors were sad about graduating, others were ecstatic. Senior, Marquis Fullwood, stated, “I was waiting on this day for so long; 12 years of hard work and I'm finally here! I can finally say I made it, and I accomplished my first major goal in life. With the year coming to an end, I'm glad because I can start my future and live for me. School will be missed, but life goes on.”
Often the things we learn either at school or in life help us succeed in the future. Even though the seniors are closing one chapter in their life, they are just beginning another one.

29 School Days In Counting
By: Harleigh Egan
There are only 29 school days left, and students are getting ready for exams while having a case of summer fever. The countdown starts now!
Jalen White, 12th said, “When I wake up in the morning, I count down the days! Summer 2K17 has to be the best one yet, because in August, when college starts, it’s studying time. Remember the phrase ‘in my bag," which means to act like you’re in your own world, focused, and to be in your zone and on your grind. We have to remember this next year.”
Cassie Long, 12th said, “The fact that seniors only have 29 days truly excites me. Summer means I get to spend more time with my family and friends and relax before I leave for the military.”
Asia Massingill, 12th said, “29 days left and I’m just waiting to graduate to begin my career as a nurse. This is a bitter-sweet feeling.”
Seniors must wake up because in 29 days they will no longer be high schoolers. Make these last few days some of your best!

Awarding Athletes
By: Julia Sierra
Crestwood’s basketball players and cheerleaders celebrated the season at the annual Winter Sports Banquet. Tons of awards were given out, and athletes had a good time socializing with each other.
All season, athletes look forward to their sports banquet. Keonna McElveen said, “What I look forward to most is seeing all my teammates and having a good time.” Some athletes received awards for their hard work and dedication.
This was the last Crestwood sports banquet for some of the seniors. A few have played their entire high school career; however, for some it was their very first year. Congratulations to all student athletes for all the work they put into being a student athlete.
